So there I was, watching my husband hop into his super amazing 2005 Ford Escape (it has a tape deck) and roll down the driveway at 6 am. Off to work he went, all dressed up in his business attire; drycleaned button down shirt and slacks. He doesn’t really have to be there until 9 am but there is a short window of opportunity to miss the crazy traffic if he leaves early.
I can see the look in his eyes as he goes through the morning routine and there is definitely a lack of sparkle. He was working from home for a few years until a transition occurred and now this is his routine. This meme basically sums up how I would feel:
If you haven’t had the opportunity to work from home yet then let me paint a picture for you. There are a few major benefits:
- No commute.
- Lots of cheap food options.
- Staying in pajamas or yoga pants all day is completely ok.
I thought working from home in yoga pants was better.
Newsflash; it isn’t. Don’t get me wrong, wearing yoga pants is AMAZING. There is more to creating joy with your chosen method of income earning than just yoga pants. Let me give you a personal example…
I owned my own business and the hours and stress became insane. I closed my business and took a break to be home with my kids more. I still had a burning desire to do something that was my own. I was asked to work part time from home. It was a perfect situation. I could work from my laptop any hour of the day. The only real requirement was for me to get a certain number of things done in that 24 hour period. Sounds amazing, right? NOPE!
I wanted to work without a limit on my earning potential.
No matter how much I did or how well I did it, I was stuck earning only the $/hr that I was being paid. There was no incentive for me to work harder or achieve more. I was just checking a box. I didn’t feel like I was helping anyone or making an impact on the world. My soul ached for more.
That is when I discovered one of the missing links.
I realized how important it is to have a PURPOSE. Doing something that actually INSPIRES you to do it more, something that makes you feel like you are making a difference in the world, like you are adding value. Do you feel that way right now? I didn’t realize it was actually possible to wake up in the morning full of purpose, with a drive and determination to achieve amazing things, to grow my business and push myself. The level of motivation and the effect on your emotional state is surprising.
It’s not just about the money.
No, money isn’t the biggest factor but it definitely needs to be on the radar. We need to be compensated appropriately for what we are doing. Having a limit on our earning potential or knowing that the only way you can make more money is if someone above you leaves the company is NOT exciting. How about knowing that every year you’ll be lucky to at least get enough of a raise to keep up with inflation? Or, you MIGHT get a bonus but maybe the company didn’t do as well this year so maybe not. Doesn’t sound motivating to me!
We want purpose and abundance.
So we know we want to feel a sense of purpose in what we are doing and we want to be compensated for our efforts. That all sounds great but the third link for me is FREEDOM. I want the freedom to do it on my terms from ANY LOCATION around the world. I don’t want to be tied to a desk or office whether it is IN my home or not.
Can you see yourself on a beach in St Kitts earning an income?
Well, that is what I am doing RIGHT NOW. Of course, there is way more to the story. I can tell you all about it if you’d like me to. Working from anywhere is really important to me. I love being able to travel and truly experience new things for more than just that quick one week tourist point of view. The key to really enjoying where you are working from is also implementing your TIME FREEDOM strategies I talked about here and FINANCIAL FREEDOM strategies here.
So how am I doing it? What is my secret?
