My twins are now 5 years old and they have a strong desire to learn. This school year has been our first “official” year of homeschooling. The fall was more of an unschooling time for us, meaning we really didn’t do any curriculum. Mostly we did crafts and interest driven learning. Starting this month we are using the All About Reading curriculum. We’re in the third lesson and it is going well so far. I think my girls are a little advanced for the curriculum but it is reassuring to have a framework to use for my first run at this. I’m supplementing the curriculum with worksheets from Education.com which are fantastic! There are some terrific printable worksheets that focus on learning to write letters. You can use uppercase or lowercase separately which is very helpful. I think I am going to print several of the alphabet worksheet to use at least weekly. I’m making it fun by allowing them to use markers to write each letter with a different color. Markers are a supervised item in our house due to the destructive power they have on furniture and clothing! Today we worked on the letter C. We walked around the house pointing at all the items that start with the letter C. Then, we went back to the table and wrote all of the words that start with C. I spelled the words out loud and they wrote the letters. Then we used the letter C worksheet and the alphabet worksheet. It was just enough to keep their interest the whole time. Now we’re taking a playtime break and then we’ll do some reading. I’m definitely starting to feel more comfortable with this process.
How did I find this curriculum? I follow several blogs and facebook pages related to homeschooling. One of them is In Lieu of Preschool. The blogger has several great ideas for fun crafts and discusses her journey with homeschooling.
Another blog I like to follow is The Pioneer Woman. Ree Drummond has some amazing photos of what she does. If you check out her site I’m sure you’ll agree!!
