My father in-law has traveled all over the country and for a retirement gift we wanted to make him something special. We found a stack of old license plates and decided to make him a mirror for his man cave.
Supplies:
Hot glue gun with several sticks.
Large mirror with smooth frame (you don’t want a lot of bevels or embellishments. The frames need to sit as level as possible.)
Several license plates to cover the frame.
Directions:
1. Select a smooth framed mirror. Measure where you intend to hang the finished piece so you know the size to get. Bring a license plate with you to help you gauge how many license plates you will place per side for the frame. They can over lap a little or a lot, get creative!
2. Once you have the mirror, arrange the license plates how you would like them to look before you start gluing. At this part I took photos just in case I mixed them up.
3. During the gluing process it helps to have an extra set of hands. Hot glue dries fast so once you squirt it on the frame or license plate, make sure you put it in place quickly. The great thing about using hot glue over crazy glue or liquid nails is that you can pop the plate off and try again if you mess it up.
4. Once all of the plates are on, allow them to harden and then carefully hang the mirror. If a plate comes off during the hanging process it is easy to glue it on again. I think this is such a neat way to reuse old license plates!
Great job! it looks fantastic!
