Make Your Own Mason Jar Drink Cups (aka Adult Sippy Cups)

April 6, 2013 By Kara 31 Comments

mason jar drink cups

My husband came up with this really fun idea!  I’m so blessed to have a husband that likes to do things like this with me.  Our girls thought they were fantastic too.  I love the vintage look to the cups.  I think mason jars are so beautiful.  Here is how we did it!

Supplies:

1).  Mason Jars–We bought the 24 oz size.  They are great for large drinks.  You could definitely get away with smaller jars though!  Buy Ball® Regular Mouth Pint Jars with Lids and Bands- Set of 12 (by Jarden Home Brands) here.

2).  3/8″ neoprene grommet (one per jar).  Buy Gardner Bender GHG-1538 3/8-Inch Hole Grommets, 5-Pack here.

3).  1/2″ spade bit.  Buy DEWALT DW1587 6 Bit 3/8-Inch to 1-Inch Spade Drill Bit Assortment here.

4).  Starbucks cold beverage straw or straw of similar width.  Buy Reusable Straws – Stainless Steel Drinking – Set of 10 + Cleaner – Eco Friendly, SAFE, NON-TOXIC non-plastic here.

Directions:

with nails

Cut hole in the lid of the mason jar (photo above).  Make sure you place it on a flat wood surface and keep the drill speed slow to medium.  This helps stop it from puckering and cuts a smooth circle.  Then place grommet in the hole (photos below).  Straw will then fit nicely through the grommet!

Done!  Enjoy you spectacular summer beverages!

Like mason jars?   Check out THESE!  I feel another DIY project coming on….

Below are some of the supplies you need!  The stainless steel straws would really class this up!

This is all kinds of awesome. My sister already calls her reusable iced coffee Starbucks cup “mama’s sippy”. SO going to do this!

I purchased rubber grommets from lowe’s that smell to the high heavens of rubber.

Totally missed that you had neoprene one’s listed on your sight. Thanks for mentioning that.

I loved this! I made about 11 tonight. However, I could never get clean cut holes, so they don’t look as neat as I wanted. 🙁 nevertheless, they’re really cute!!! Especially with the blue jars. Another cute idea is the cuppow, but they’re expensive!

I almost never comment, however i did a few searching and wound up here Make Your Own Mason Jar Drink Cups (aka Adult Sippy Cups) | Life Sanity.

And I actually do have a couple of questions for you if you usually
do not mind. Could it be simply me or does it seem like some of the remarks come across as if
they are left by brain dead individuals? 😛 And, if you are writing
on additional online social sites, I would like to follow anything new you have to post.

Would you make a list of the complete urls of your public pages like your Facebook page, twitter feed,
    or linkedin profile?

I love this! I am making these as a favor for a baby shower that I am throwing at the end of the month. However, I drilled a hole with the 1/2″ spade bit and the hole wasn’t big enough to even get the straw through 🙁 I’m wondering if I’m not drilling it down far enough? Am I supposed to drill with more than the tip?

Yes, you should drill so that you have a hole big enough for the straw.

Hey there would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with?
I’m looking to start my own blog soon but I’m having a tough
time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something
unique. P.S Apologies for getting off-topic but I
    had to ask!
