- Equipment (see details at LifeSanity.com/periscope)
- Tripod: This is a great way to mount your iPad so you can avoid the camera shake. You may want this ball mount to mount that sits on top of the tripod and allows you to use the tripod for a variety of devices, including tablets. This here mounts on the Manfroto mount and holds iPads. It will also work with an iPad Mini.
- Selfie stick
- Clip on microphone.
- Fancy lens and lighting optional.
- Broadcasting Tips
- First Time: keep it short and do something natural.
- Preparation: write down some notes about what you want to cover.
- Screensaver: Hold something in front of your camera before you press “Broadcast” or point the camera at something interesting.
- Slow Down: allow enough time for people to come on to the broadcast, to say hello to a few people, talk for a while and say goodbye. Just a few minutes is fine. Welcoming people is like giving people a chance to sit down and get comfortable.
- Camera: It will take time to work out how the camera works. To change camera direction from front to rear camera, just double tap the screen. There is a slight lag while the screen changes direction
- Start Talking: as soon as you hit Start Broadcast if it is just to welcome people in!
- Showing Your Face: You don’t have to! Just scope what YOU see. But, don’t forget to talk.
- Answering Questions: As people comment they will ask questions. This can derail you from topic or cause you to lose focus. Let people know that you are welcoming them in and then will talk after. Focus on talking when you are talking and occasionally stop and then go back to chat. If you try to talk and respond to comments for the entire broadcast, you run the risk of sounding like you speak in half sentences. Spend some time to finish up at the end, again responding to chat/comments on screen and to say goodbye.
- Involve Your Followers: have specific Q & A sessions or allow time at the end for this.
- Hearts: Say “thank you for the hearts” or “I appreciate the hearts” but don’t beg for them.
- Follow Me: tell people how to follow you.
- Share Your Scope: tell people that they can share your scope. Ask them to swipe right (iOS) or swipe up (Android) to share the scope and invite viewers. They can share with specific people, all of their followers, or to Twitter. During a replay you can also swipe and share then too so that your followers can watch it within 24 hours.
- Topic Tips: Pick Your Passion
- Pick the topic that you can talk about underwater.
- Choose something you are passionate about. You will feel less like you are presenting and more like you are chatting with a friend. Turn on the camera and go for it.
- Be Consistent
- The Scopers that are doing well have something special that is shining through – they are starting their scopes in a consistent way or giving tips about a consistent topic, wearing the same hat or glasses, or using similar welcome phrases and questions each time.
- From what you wear to the phrasing you use (that should come naturally), to where you scope from… try to be consistent in some way.
- Consistency breeds familiarity and we crave a sense of belonging. This is like reality TV on steroids.
- Mix it up! Consistency is important but so is connecting with your audience. All business and no play is no fun.

- Other Tips
- Hot Tip: Have your settings set to save your scopes – then you can repurpose them and post them to other places later like Facebook or upload to YouTube. If you have this setting switched on, every scope will save to your phone by default. I love this option.
- Data Warning: Periscope uses a lot of data so use WiFi when you can.
- Airplane Mode: Your phone ringing will interrupt your scope (I’ve had this happen many times), so switch your phone to airplane mode, and then switch WiFi back on. There is also a Do Not Disturb function on most phones.
- Special Landing Page: This is a fancy idea. If you have a website, create a special landing page just for Periscope topics and upload videos there. Here is the easy way…link your Periscope account to katch.me. It will automatically save all of your scopes there and you can share the link later! Mine is katch.me/karaLcozier
