Why I take my coffee with butter…

April 14, 2013 By Kara 23 Comments

bulletproofThe best thing about my morning is that first cup of coffee and the serenity that surrounds it.  I absolutely crave getting up earlier than the rest of my family to enjoy those few minutes of reflection.  I clear my mind and focus it on the day ahead.  About three weeks ago my husband read about Bulletproof Coffee.  He walked into the kitchen, took out the Magic Bullet, and started making it.  He poured in coffee, added butter and coconut oil.  I watched in horror as he wasted (or so I thought) 2 cups of coffee.

He took a sip, I waited….

The verdict?  He said is was a little creamy and frothy and didn’t taste like butter at all.  So I tried it.  It was really good!  It had a thicker frothiness to it than a cappuccino and I really enjoyed it.

Beyond the Taste:  How I feel

Tasting good only gets you so far.  Three weeks later, I am still drinking it every day.  I actually CRAVE it in the morning.  I feel great after just one cup of it.  I’m energized, I feel alert, and focused.  This feeling lasts all day.  I also noticed that I’m not as hungry.  I’m not intentionally trying to lose weight but I have noticed that I’ll have a cup of Bulletproof Coffee and then two hours later remember that I should eat breakfast.  My husband feels the exact same way!

Sounds great but why?

According to the recipe’s creator, Dave Asprey, “It can promote brain function, memory, and energy levels.  It can serve as a massive source of antioxidants and is associated with all sorts of positive health outcomes.  Coffee can even effect your body and mind like Chi Gong exercises.  It can even help you build muscle without exercising. You never feel hungry, get low energy, and as evidenced by our conversation with Chris Masterjohn, the saturated fat is good for you.”

Ingredients for Bulletproof Coffee (see Snapguide at bottom of post for slideshow instructions)

  1. At least 2tbs Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter (unsalted).
  2. 1-2tbs of MCT oil (15-30g or 15-30ml)
  3. 2 cups (~453g or 500ml) of hot coffee brewed with low-toxin beans (like Bulletproof® Upgraded™ Coffee) using a stainless steel filter

I’ve been making this recipe by substituting the MCT oil for coconut oil.  I’m about to bite the bullet (pun intended) and buy some MCT oil.  Learn more about MCT oil here.

Upgraded MCT oil is extracted from palm and  coconut oil in a time consuming process, making it the most potent MCT on the market.  No metal catalysts are used in the manufacturing process, and every batch of our MCT is tested for heavy metals.  Upgraded MCT is 100% capric and caprylic acid and has a perfect 8-10 carbon saturated fat level.

The coffee can be DECAF!  I haven’t switched to 100% decaf yet. The important thing to know is that the coffee has to be high quality coffee.  Here are the reasons to consider buying Upgraded™ Coffee beans:

  1. It is carefully produced and tested with new and old methods to target the lowest toxin content vs. normal coffee, so you get all the benefits of coffee without the negative health effects.
  2. The beans are harvested from a single family-owned estate in Guatemala located 1250 meters above sea level, high enough to produce great coffee.
  3. The estate is Passive Organic and the family that owns it does not allow chemicals (herbicides, pesticides, etc.) It is not economical for Central American boutique coffee estates to become certified organic.
  4. They are hand picked by experienced coffee harvesters – skilled people who know how to pick only perfectly ripe berries.
  5. Most coffee beans are processed by either leaving them in the sun and elements to wither and dry, or by pressing them and letting them ferment (spoil) to remove the outer layer of the bean.  Both of these techniques are known to produce significant levels of mycotoxins as they enhance flavor. Upgraded™ Coffee beans are mechanically processed right after picking using only clean cold water.  This more expensive process is safer because it dramatically reduces harmful molds or bacteria from impacting your health.
  6. The beans are roasted in small batches by the #1 ranked roaster in United States under the strictest conditions.  Roasting the beans enhances their antioxidant capacity and flavor to provide you with a healthier, tastier cup of coffee.

Upgraded™ Coffee beans are cultivated by a grower who is Rainforest Alliance certified to be sustainable.

I am in love with this way to drink my morning cup of coffee!  Buy it and try it.  You WILL love it too!

Just to clarify, what’s the best way to prepare this beverage? Do you brew it all together or add the oil/butter in after the coffee is in the cup? Thanks!

Great post! I have been wanting to try this, but I recently quit drinking coffee. I hadn’t thought to do it with decaf!

Thanks! I’ve been really enjoying it. I just had the following comment from a friend of mine who tried it today:
“Okay, so it happened I had exactly 2 cups of leftover coffee in the pot this morning. Yes I know, gross, but I have learned things don’t have to be perfect to be good. And I had some grass fed butter and some coconut oil. And it happens that I have not been sleeping well and felt somewhere in the category of warmed over dog poop. So I tried this in my own special way, and all I have to say is WOW. Not only am I energized but my mood did a 180 to on top of the world. I have to try this little experiment again tomorrow morning. With fresh coffee….”

Thank you so much for this great post. I have been drinking bulletproof coffee for about a year and love it. All of the positive claims have been true for me! In regard to drinking decaf, I wanted to add a note that I read on Dave Asprey’s website: [IMPORTANT: You should never drink decaf coffee. Besides its lower antioxidant value (and horrible taste), decaf is guaranteed to contain mycotoxins or other bad stuff.]

Sounds like there’s some conflicting information there, Michelle. He sells decaf right in his web store, so it must not be a ‘never, ever’ kind of thing.

i love trying new things, especially if it has to do with coconut oil. I actually just tried it (as I am typing this) and it’s really good. of course I had to work with what I have in stock, and instead of the bulletproof coffee (which I just ordered), I used my esspresso machine to brew some mediocore coffee grinds, threw it in the blender with coconut oil and ghee. pretty tasty. I think I’ll stick with the ghee and coconut oil that I always keep in stock instead getting the mct and kerrygold butter. unless you think it’s important to do it that way. anyway, this is a great way to upgrade from boring old coffee.

I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the layout of your website?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way
of content so people could connect with it better.
Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two images.
Maybe you could space it out better?

You know how I talk about how God whispers to us? You know how I talk about how God whispers to us? It’s like whispers of divine inspiration, warnings, ideas, encouragement...

God: “Hey Kara, do you really think that’s a good idea?”

Me: “Hold my beer.”

God: “Kara, you’re doing it again. How did that work out for you last time?”

Me: “Hold my beer.”

God: “Kara, third strike, you’re doing it again...it keeps not working out this way...”

Me: “Hold my beer.”

God: [Throws brick to upset my plans and wake me up.]

Me: “Oh snap, what was I thinking??? Maybe it’s time to try a new approach...”

What’s a brick look like?

For me, bricks usually show up as an illness, or some sort of physical ailment like stubbing my toe, slipping and falling etc. Sometimes it’s my laptop or phone breaking. Bricks are meant to wake us up, snap us out of the hypnotic rhythm so we can choose to pivot.

I’m seeing God throwing some boulders right now.

I prefer whispers. Apparently the time for whispers has passed...
